Why take swimming lessons?

Swimming lessons are basically the process of learning how to swim. Written here are answers to the questions on why do we have to take swimming lessons, how to teach your child how to swim, and what are the benefits of swimming.

Teaching your child to swim

Children are carefree and playful. But what if they play in and around the water? To guarantee that they will be having their best times playing with water, and securing their safety, it would be best for your child to know at least the basics of swimming.

Children are usually suggested to start their swimming lessons at the age of four. However, there exist infant swimming lessons. Infant swimming lessons are said to help the infants and prevent them from drowning. The age bracket for infant swimming lessons is between one to four years old.

Swimming lessons reduce the risk of children from drowning. The study shows that 90% of children who took swimming lessons are less likely to be involved in drowning-related accidents.

There are ways to teach your child to swim. If you are confident and proficient enough, you might want to teach your child on how to swim. However, it would be best to enroll them in swimming lessons. Before anything else, the child’s safety should be the number one priority. Make sure everything and every step you take should have precautionary measures.

When teaching your child anything, it would be nice to act like it is a game. They would most likely be more interested in it. It would also redirect their attention to any activity from fear to entertainment. These are some basic steps in teaching your child how to swim:

1. Teach your child breath control

This is the first basic step in teaching your child on how to swim. The child’s general reaction to anything which is new is fear. You should do the process properly and get your child’s trust. The most usual way to enhance this skill is to play and blow bubbles underwater. Act like you’re playing with your child on who could hold their breath longer. Act like you have lesser stamina than they have and adjust accordingly to let them win the games. This will motivate and give them the happy feeling of victory. If your child opens his or her eyes underwater, smile. This will uplift their mood and help them lessen the fear.

2. Practice your child’s muscles

This can be done when playing outside and in the water. In the pool, play with your child and tell him to splash water or make them mimic how the dogs swim. You can even tell them and pretend to be catching fishes by swooping the water down. This is to strengthen your child’s muscles.

3. Practice and hold them into position for some swim

This is usually seen and in the beaches and in pools. When parents teach their child on how to swim they hold their child in a manner such that they seem to float on the water. The parents, facing the child, should start to move backward and ask them to paddle like in step number two. Later then, ask them to kick or flip their feet. This can be done like playing a racing game and catching fishes and so on. This is to make them get used to the swimming position.

4. Teach your child to kick better

On the side of the pools, or using a float, have your child practice kicking. This should be done regularly. It would be best for your child to know the proper kicking manner. Like pointing his or her toes when kicking.

5. Teaching your child to plunge in the water

This can be done by holding your child in the waist for support or by letting him stand on your knees. Prior to this, put a toy or something for your child to be a goal to reach. You should be two feet away from the wall. Ask your child to get that toy by swimming through his or her way. This will take some time and if successful, adjust the gap from you and the wall accordingly.

Do these on a regular basis until your child is proficient enough to swim independently. Make sure to guarantee that every step is safe, fun, and full of love.

Health benefits of swimming

Swimming is probably the best all over the sport. Swimming provides uses almost all of our muscles during the process of swimming. This gives us an all-over body workout.

Kids these days are exposed and introduced to several gadgets and toys. This mode of entertainment gives your child a passive lifestyle making them more prone obesity and other complications. Involving your child into swimming lessons and the sport of swimming itself will greatly give your child a lot of benefits.

Swimming, like any sport, will teach your child discipline. They will be taught on how to be on time during training days and on how to listen to their swimming mentors.

Swimming gives them a training routine to follow which gives them an active and healthy lifestyle. Their training routine will require them to be consistent and to build their strengths which will improve their health. This will also help them maintain a healthy weight to avoid obesity.

Swimming allows them to participate and to socialize with their peers. This will introduce them to the concept of friendships. They will be able to build relationships at their early age. They will be able to value and enjoy these friendships throughout the years.

The swimming sport introduces your children in the competitive scene. This will encourage them to build and achieve their goals. They will learn how the value of teamwork and sportsmanship.

Just like other sports, swimming will surely improve your children’s stamina, endurance, and perseverance. Swimming is a sport that involves almost all of the muscles in the body. This will help build and enhance almost all of their muscles simultaneously. Also, swimming requires you to hold their breath underwater. This makes you build stamina which greatly improves their cardiovascular endurance.

Who should take swimming lessons?

Although people think about swimming mostly during summer, it is a great recreational activity that can be done at almost any time of the year. Swimming may be a form of a hobby, profession, entertainment, or even just a pastime whether at the beach or at an indoor or outdoor pool. While it can occur anytime and anywhere, it can also absolutely be participated by anyone in all ages including the elderly, the adults, the young adults, the kids, and even babies!

Although it is not true that babies are naturally born with the ability to swim, they have this thing called as the bradycardic reflex or response, which is also known as the slowing of heart rate and breathing, that makes them look like they have swimming abilities. According to a pediatric pulmonologist in Colorado named Jeffrey Wagener, babies react by holding their breath and opening their eyes upon being submerged in the water until they are around six months old.

Basically, the bradycardic response is caused by the ways of the parents when they blow in the face of their babies and thus making the babies hold their breath and close their eyes as a primary reflex. These reflexes make the babies look like they are born with swimming abilities or natural swimmers because they move their arms and legs in a swimming motion when they are placed in the water.

Having bradycardic response does not mean that babies can actually swim, it only just makes them appear as though they can. Not just because it is ridiculously dangerous for babies to swallow big amounts of pool water, it may lead to having the risk of drowning. The bradycardic response can be used in a manner to help babies swim in some infant swimming programs but it is not recommended to teach swimming lessons for children having the age below one-year-old.

The AAP or also known as the American Academy of Pediatrics is suggesting that parents should ask for a recommendation from doctors to find out if their baby, after turning one year old, is already up for participating in swimming lessons and seek for the best type of program for their baby. Simply put, babies are not yet strong enough to keep their head above water and they are also not yet old enough to control their breathing but some infants really enjoy splashing around in the water so just keep them company at all times.

As we are all aware, learning and knowing how to swim clearly means that one is less likely to drown – whether it may be a person or an animal. It is advisable to take swimming lessons starting at a young age and continuing until one becomes proficient.

Swimming lessons are for those who wants to become a professional swimmer, those who wish to join a varsity team in a school, those who wants to improve their breathing skills, those who wants to build their whole body strength, those who are just interested in learning, and most especially those who wants to be safe in and around the water.

Benefits of swimming lessons

Taking swimming lessons gives people multiple benefits. First of all, it is essential to the safety of the people since it makes them have fewer risks of drowning. Being comfortable in and around the water may be a stepping stone for people to actually be interested in joining the sport. Second, the basic strokes are really easy and can be mastered even by beginners.

As what we all know, only a few people want to invest their time in learning something if it is a very challenging and difficult thing to do. In swimming, one can actually start off just with the simplest strokes and thus makes it motivating and eager to learn more. Next, one can learn to give importance to teamwork as much as individuality.

To become good swimmers, it takes to have the value of teamwork. The people along with you are also the ones who will support, help, and make every hard time bearable. Motivating each other and being there for each other actually, makes every swimmer become their own best version of themselves. Also, being enrolled in swimming lessons teach people how to manage their time schedules.

It can help dissolve laziness and can make the body always on the move since there are tasks that need to be completed in order to have free time in keeping up with swimming lessons. Lastly, the lessons that are learned can be continued for a lifetime. If adults think that they are at their most proficient extent, their swimming skills can still be upgraded and enhanced to a higher level in the later years of their lives. As time passes by and they still become more and more active in swimming, it can help in increasing their lifespan and improve their overall physical and mental health.

Aside from the many and abundant health benefits of swimming, there are also other various advantages. Swimming is very popular both as a sport and as a recreational activity. Whenever there is a celebration, swimming is always on top of the check list. Whenever the weather gets from slightly warm to awfully hot, people crave for fun ways of refreshments or to cool off by dipping in the pool or going to the beach. Swimming makes families and friends get together, socialize, bond, and have fun.

On the other hand, swimming as a sport is probably the best sports option if you would look into the entire physical muscles that are involved in the process. Swimmers usually practice their routine in the early morning of every practice day. This gives swimmers the initial discipline to wake up early and start their training. Swimmers especially those who practice and swims in the outdoor pools gets to see and experience beautiful sunrises.
